Super Mario Maker offers more tools than you might think

Nintendo published a handy Super Mario Maker overview video to YouTube this morning, detailing many of the game’s elements, old and new. As most of us already knew, the game will allow players to make the Super Mario levels of their “dreams.” Here are a few interesting new tidbits we learned from the video,  though:

  • New creation tools will be unlocked for individual players on a daily basis, and only if the game was played for at least 5 minutes the day before.
  • Some tools will allow you to add audible and visual flourishes. Similarly, shaking a normal-looking music note block will turn it into an actual note, and the pitch of these notes will change depending on their elevation in the stage.
  • Players will be able to share their Super Mario level creations online, of course. Those who want to play these levels can browse based on popularity (Star Ranking), featured levels, or “Up and Coming” users. You’ll even be able to follow users, so there’s plenty of excitement to be had for folks just looking to play Super Mario levels, as opposed to making them.

The video finishes by reiterating the game’s amiibo compatibility. If you want to see the full list of amiibo figures that will work with the game, click here. It includes the likes of Chibi-Robo, the Inkling girl and boy, Tom Nook, and more, so you may see some surprises.
