Splatoon was just released upon the gaming population, excitement is in the air, and you, Squiddo, want in on the splat-tastic action! Turf Wars, and the like, are no place for rookie squids, so use these quick tips to get your tentacles wet and play like an inkling war hero!

#1. Choose your controls wisely
Unless you want to look and feel like a rusting robot wearing a inkling costume, you must go and adjust your control options to fit your weapon play style. Will you use traditional twin analog, or will you go hybrid gyro controls? For all weapons, besides the Inkbrush and Roller, I highly suggest the hybrid controls, since you’ll be aiming literally everywhere!
#2. Ink turf first, splat foes later
Wins, ability upgrades, and money all come from you and your team’s effort to accomplish the main objective – cover the map in your ink! Splatting enemies takes a secondary role of importance, so treat it as such! Inking walls can help you reach your team’s goal by helping you ambush the unsuspecting, but won’t add to the total turf inked.
#3. Higher ground is everything
The super fresh squids know where it’s at, and that’s high ground! Not only will you have the competitive edge on inking the surrounding turf, but also on your would-be advancing opponents! Scope out the map for these higher sections, get there first and victory is almost a certainty!
#4. Gamepad map, chimes, and squid-jumping is your best friend
Paying attention to your map on the Gamepad is essential. The Gamepad will tell you where you need to go and where the opposing team is heading. Learn when to team up and when to go solo to cover turf and take out foes. Are you hearing the “c’mon!” chime sounding off? That means your teammate has or is taking over a strategic point in the map and needs the team’s support hold it down or to advance even further! Squid-jump back to your base when need to, or better yet, to your chiming “c’mon!” teammate!
Now you’re no longer a rookie squid! Use these tips to freshen up your Splatoon skills and the bad guys won’t know what inked ’em every time!
