Super Mario Maker update brings keys and skewers, available now

Another free Super Mario Maker update has added keys and skewers to the popular level creator. Shaking a P-block will create a key, but what’s a key without a door to unlock: shaking the door item will yield a door with a keyhole. On top of that, regular gold coins can now transform into pink key coins, all of which will need to be collected to acquire a key in levels. Up to 5 key coins can be used in a single level.

Keys can also be attached to enemies, so long-desired mandatory boss fights are now a possibility.

Speaking of bosses, creators are sure to make skewers into one of players’ worst enemies. The giant, spinning columns of spikes made their debut in Super Mario World, defining themselves as one of the most memorable obstacles to ever grace a Mario game. In Super Mario Maker, shaking a thwomp makes a skewer, which can then be attached to floors, walls, or ceilings.

Outside the actual game, the Super Mario Maker bookmark website now shows world record holders for each level.
