Direct Takes: Rhythm Heaven Megamix

  • Game: Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  • Platform: 3DS
  • Release Date: Later This Year
  • Takeaway: What’s Old is New

Rhythm Tengoku (the GBA, Japan-exclusive first entry in the Rhythm Heaven franchise) is a game I only dreamed would come to the West. Well, it’s not coming in its full glory, of course, but a handful of “carefully selected” rhythm mini-games from it will be included in the upcoming 3DS title Rhythm Heaven Megamix. The collection will also include rhythm games from Rhythm Heaven for the DS and Rhythm Heaven Fever for Wii, as well as 30 brand-new mini-games, all of it adding up to a whopping 100+ rhythm game bonanza.

Everything about the Rhythm Heaven series appeals to me: the rhythmic gameplay, the quirky mini-games, the colorful visuals, etc. Megamix is something I absolutely did not see coming, which by itself made the most recent Nintendo Direct a success in my eyes. I will admit, on the other hand, that it seems like Rhythm Heaven is a somewhat niche franchise, meaning many fans probably don’t feel the same way I do. However, you can’t deny it’s always exciting news when anything that has previously been Japan-exclusive is announced for the West, even if it’s only part of a whole.

Rhythm Heaven Megamix is a dream come true for fans of the series, and anyone else who has even a slight interest in the series or rhythm games in general should definitely keep it on their radar as well.
