Did you get a chance to play Paper Mario this month? If so, we would love to hear your thoughts on it! Here are some of mine:
- The game has great pacing. New and continually interesting characters add a lot to the story, plus it’s nice that the game cuts to Princess Peach and Bowser between chapters.
- Combat is strong, overall. I do feel like some of the side characters’ techniques ask too much of the player, though; a move might cost 3 FP to use, but you also have to nail the action command to make it worthwhile, and some of the action commands are really demanding.
- Paper Mario looks amazing for an N64 game. The character animations alone should win some kind of award, in my opinion.
- The Mushroom Kingdom is chock full of surprises and delights in Paper Mario. Toad Town in particular is jam-packed with unexpected portals, gateways, mysterious characters, and secrets.
Now for my dislikes:
- Inventory management is a tedious pain in the neck.
- Backtracking is not a problem…except when it comes to Forever Forest. I stopped delivering letters once I realized I would have to go through that place again (I’m not interested in looking up the answers).
- Some of the party characters become somewhat obsolete, especially when it comes to their field actions.
