- Game: Hyrule Warriors Legends
- Platform: Nintendo 3DS
- Release Date: March 25, 2016
- Takeaway: Linkle
Here are some things I know about Hyrule Warriors Legends: 1) it’s basically a port of the Wii U game Hyrule Warriors, but with additional story elements revolving around The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, including new playable characters, 2) the game’s stereoscopic 3-D effect is exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS models, and 3) it will feature a new original character named Linkle, who everyone is sure to love.
Really, I have no complaints about the Wind Waker stuff. In fact, I’m thrilled Tecmo Koei is adding a substantial amount of content to keep this from being a straight-up port.
On the other hand, I have a thing or two to say about numbers 2 and 3 in my list. First of all, I strongly feel this game should have taken full advantage of the New Nintendo 3DS hardware. The system’s increased processing power has been sorely underutilized since its inception. Not that I want to see dozens of New-exclusive games, but if only one feature (stereoscopic 3-D) is exclusive to the system, then the entire game may as well be made exclusive to the system.
Alright, now let’s talk about Linkle.
No way, it’s a female Link! In all seriousness, though, what’s the point of this character? I feel like her existence merely serves to make her the next Lana. Lana, I liked. She had some cool powers, and her personality was actually a nice fit within the Zelda universe. Linkle is an uninspired, female version of Link, plain and simple! Was she added for simple shock value? That’s what bugs me most; there’s no good reason for Linkle to exist.
I’m sure Linkle will prove to have a nice, bubbly personality. She may be loved by many in the end. Based on the apparent inspiration behind her design, however, I’m even less likely to spend money on Hyrule Warriors Legends than ever.
