I’m starting to really look forward to the beginning of each new month, considering it means we get to start a new game for the Game of the Month Club! For the month of November, we have decided to play Paper Mario, a Nintendo 64 game suggested by T. Gantt on Twitter. The game is available as a Virtual Console download on both Wii and Wii U.
For those of you who are joining us for the first time, here is what our Game of the Month Club is all about:
- “It’s like a book club, but with games.”
- Any game on any Nintendo system is on the table.
- Readers of the site and listeners of the podcast are encouraged to play and discuss the game in question with us! Use #NFGameClub on social media, plus you can follow me (@HollyFellmeth), Matt Desind (@OnlyMattDesind), Bradley Kragen (@BradleyKragen), Mike McSurdy (@Mike_The_Poet) and NintendoFever (@nintendofever) on Twitter for good measure.
This somehow escaped my notice over the years, but Paper Mario was developed by the RPG/strategy pros at Intelligent Systems, the studio behind the Fire Emblem series, Codename: S.T.E.A.M., and Advance Wars. The game was released on the Nintendo 64 in February 2001 in North America. It started development as a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG, but it turned into more of a spiritual successor and launched a brand new series instead.
If you’re like me, Paper Mario has been gathering dust, so to speak, in your backlog for years, so what better excuse could you possibly have to finally play it?! Let’s have some 2-dimensional fun this month!
