New details on Splatoon emerge

Nintendo has revealed some additional information about first-party Wii U title Splatoon. All the info you need to know from the update is right here:

  • Splatoon is a third-person shooter that combines shooting, strategy, and action into one game.
  • The primary mode in Splatoon is an online mode called Turf War. It pits two teams of four against each other in a battle to cover the largest amount of territory in their team’s color of ink.
  • The single player mode in Splatoon will take the player “deeper into the game’s unique world and characters.” It’s also meant to teach the tips and techniques players will need to play online effectively.
  • As you play online, your character, known as an “Inkling,” will gain levels and earn money to purchase clothing and weapons. You’ll be able to create weapon sets, which consist of a main weapon and a sub weapon, to quickly choose before a battle. An special gauge will fill as you fight, and once it’s full you can unleash a special attack for a short period of time.

  • NEW: Nintendo has revealed a few new stages for multiplayer mode: Blackbelly Skatepark, Saltspray Rig, and Walleye Warehouse.
  • NEW: A new online mode has also been revealed, and it’s known simply as Ranked Battle (it’s pretty self-explanatory). Only players who have reached level 10 or more in the Turf War mode will be able to participate in ranked battles. Players can increase their ranking from C- to A+, but it’s dynamic, so that can change!
  • NEW: Splat Zones is a new way to play in the ranked battles mode online in Splatoon. It differs from Turf Wars in that players must try to control specific areas of the map, rather than simply mark up the most territory.

  • The single player mode in Splatoon will feature unique stages that will test players’ shooting, jumping and ink-splattering abilities. You’ll explore “the underground base of the game’s army of octopi antagonists, the Octarians.” There will also be “clever devices” unique to single player.

Splatoon is set to be released this May!
