From Neko Entertainment and Upper Byte comes the new platform one player game called Wooden Sen’SeY. This is a Japanese-themed game is an action game that is pretty difficult to complete but also loads of fun.

Your character named Goro goes through different levels getting revenge by defeating black blobs and other enemies with his axes. There are 9 colorful levels with different themes, from Japanese Temples on land to a level under the sea! There is a prologue level that walks you through the different controls and gadgets you can use (including a grappling hook!). You can use these to kill enemies, but the ultimate weapon is the pound attack (which you are taught in the prologue). The pound attack involves the motion sense of the Wii U gamepad, which is a cool feature for playing on the TV. Each level gets increasingly more difficult. There is a lot of frustrating times of dying and having to go back to the beginning of the level right before you finish it.  But to me, that only increases my level of confidence when I complete it! There is also a Time Trial mode that you can unlock. The sounds Goro makes throughout the game are pretty funny and the Japanese themed music and scenery is one of my favorites.

Though this game is very fun and challenging, my problem is the controls (physics) of the game. as sometimes the characters reactions don’t seem to match what would normally happen in the game. For one thing, it’s hard to gain momentum with the grappling hook, and the jumps are not always reliable. It also seems (more in the underwater mode) that you get “hurt” before you actually touch the enemy, which is obviously frustrating. This makes battles hard and maneuvering through obstacles even harder (one reason the game is challenging).

Other than that, it is a great game. I really enjoy it and enjoy the challenge. The graphics are detailed and colorful. I love the beautiful and unique scenery for each level and the amount of time obviously taken to make it. It really gives the game life and makes it pleasant to play. Figuring out what combination of attacks defeats the enemy the quickest is part of the fun. The off-TV-screen experience is just as good as playing it on the TV.

The Recommendation

For anyone who wants a good action filled and cute platform game, this is the game for you. Be prepared for playing it for hours and losing track of time as you complete levels. This game was released at the Wii U eShop and is well worth its price of $9.99.
